Abstract

ABSTRACTHypertension was a common health problem among older adults and had the potential to cause complications if not properly controlled. In addition to pharmacological therapy, safe and simple non-pharmacological interventions were needed, one of which was laughter therapy. This study aimed to determine the effect of laughter therapy on blood pressure in older adults with hypertension in the working area of Gandus Public Health Center. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 17 older adults with hypertension who were selected using purposive sampling. The study was conducted from December 19 to 21, 2025. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using the paired sample t-test. The results showed that the mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 155.53 mmHg to 145.24 mmHg, and the mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 95.59 mmHg to 80.47 mmHg, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Therefore, it was concluded that laughter therapy had a significant effect on reducing blood pressure in older adults with hypertension. It was recommended that public health centers and integrated health posts for older adults consider laughter therapy as a supportive non-pharmacological intervention to enhance promotive and preventive health efforts. Keywords: Blood pressure, Elderly, Hypertension, Laughter therapy.
