Abstract

ABSTRACT

Adolescence is a unique period in life because it is a time of intensive physical, psychosocial and cognitive development. Teenagers need the highest amount of nutrition during their growth and development. Adolescents are a group that is vulnerable to iron deficiency because of the increased need for iron itself due to rapid growth in adolescence. Anemia is an important health problem for teenagers because it affects growth and energy levels. . Iron deficiency is considered a major cause of anemia and other causes of anemia include malaria, helminth infections, chronic infections, and micronutrient deficiencies such as riboflavin, folic acid, vitamins A, C, B12 and B6. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of administration iron, vitamin B6 and zinc on hemoglobin levels in anemic adolescent girls in Nanggalo District, Padang City. This research is a quasi experimental research with one group pretest-posttest. Anemic teenage girls who were 10 students of MERCUBAKTIJAYA Padang STIKes who met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected to receive iron, vitamin B6 and zinc supplements from April to May 2010. At the end of the study, a significant average difference in hemoglobin levels before and after administration of iron, vitamin B6 and zinc (p <0.05). Daily administration of iron, vitamin B6 and zinc can increase hemoglobin levels before and after intervention in anemic adolescent girls. Supplementation takes longer to increase hemoglobin levels so that it can meet the body's reserves.
