Abstract

Background: The bay leaves (Syzgium polyanthum) contain various active compounds, including flavonoids. The flavonoid content in bay leaves can help reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of bay leaf extract (Syzgium polyanthum) in reducing triglyceride levels in male rats with hyperlipidemia. Methods: This research falls under the scope of Pharmacology and Internal Medicine and was conducted from July to September 2023. The research type employed was True Experimental, utilizing a Pretest-PostTest Only Control Group Design to measure or observe the effects of treatment. The study population consisted of 28 male white Wistar rats, approximately 3 months old, with a body weight ranging from 150-250 grams. The rats were healthy and free from anatomical abnormalities, and were obtained from the Pharmacology Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Andalas University using total sampling technique. The analysis of univariate data is presented through descriptive distribution, as well as bivariate analysis using paired sample t-tests and Wilcoxon signed ranks tests. The data is processed using the computerized SPSS program, IBM version 25.0. Results: The statistical tests indicate that bay leaf extract can lower triglyceride levels, and there were significant differences observed between the treatment groups (p<0.05). Treatment 3, with a dose of 1.5 g/KgBB, was found to be effective and showed a significant difference (p<0.05) compared to the other groups. Conclusion: The Male rats with hyperlipidemia experience a decrease in triglyceride levels after being administered bay leaf extract. The most effective dose for reducing triglyceride levels is 1.5 g/kgBB in treatment group 3.
